Transfer to Oregon Yearly Meeting

  • In 1915 Tacoma and Entiat Monthly Meetings request that Puget Sound Quarterly Meeting be transferred from Indiana to Oregon Yearly Meeting
  • "Owing to obligations we have already assumed we do not feel free to make the change proposed. When conditions change so that we could be self-supporting we might be able to establish a Yearly Meeting here in the state of Washington. This meeting therefore is united in judgment that the proposed transfer is not wise." 8th Mo. 7th 1915 Seattle Monthly Meeting
  • Sometime after this Tacoma and Entiat Meetings independently change affiliation to Oregon Yearly Meeting
  • A transfer to Oregon Yearly Meeting is suggested multiple times between 1915 and early 40's
  • Friends Memorial Church consistently declines to move to Oregon Yearly Meeting
  • We prefer a Northwest Yearly Meeting or a Yearly Meeting in Washington
  • There is a desire to strengthen contact with Vancouver B.C. Meeting
  • 1936, we work with establishment of The Northwest International Association of the Religious Society of Friends
Stuart Trust Fund
  • Numerous grants were awarded to the church by Elbridge Stuart through the Stuart Trust Fund
  • 1929-A call will be extended to Gervas Carey provided Mr. Stuart gives $500 to the budget; Granted
  • 1937-EA Stuart is aware of the financial status but no response yet
  • A number of times there is record of a grant, which will run out and they have to let it go
  • A number of times, grant funds are received by the church
  • As late as 1964 a grant of $2,500 was received from the Stuart Trust Fund and used for the Education addition to the building in 1964
Changes
  • 1937-a Quaker Center is established in the University District. Beatrice Shipley of Philadelphia comes as Secretary of Religious Education
  • There is talk of selling the church and moving to the University District, which is approved by Indiana YM and Elbridge Stuart
  • There are disagreements in the meeting
  • --- Selling the church and moving to U District
  • --- The need for a pastor
The establishment of University Friends Meeting
  • July 1938-The Friends Center Board feels it is time to set up a meeting in the University District
  • The request is approved
  • Members express their feelings
  • 5-wish to move
  • 2-interested in both
  • 1-attend here in a.m. and center at night
  • 1-wished to know the Mind of Christ
  • 1-felt need of a leader whether a pastor or not
  • 1-wanted to do the right thing
  • Committee to make recommendations for the establishment of a meeting in the University district
The Separation of the Meetings
  • Two preparative meetings are established and meet independently
  • --- Friends Memorial Church Preparative Meeting
  • --- University Friends Preparative Meeting
  • Seattle Monthly Meeting of Friends continues to meet in a combined session
  • Puget Sound Quarterly Meeting approves establishment of University Meeting November 29, 1940
  • Last combined meeting of Seattle Monthly Meeting of Friends December 8, 1940
