North Seattle Friends Meeting

  • Continues to meet as Seattle Monthly Meeting of Friends. The preparative meeting is discontinued.
  • 1941-Begin to talk of moving north
  • December 8, 1940-Decide to purchase lots on E 80th and 24th NE in Hayes Park
  • 1945-23rd and Spruce building sold
  • Sept. 1946-Begin talk of joining Oregon Yearly Meeting
  • May 1947-Seattle Monthly Meeting approved transition to Oregon Yearly Meeting. Official request letter written
The problem
  • No one questions the move to Oregon Yearly Meeting as a matter of affiliation
  • Indiana YM asks if people are aware of the financial implications of such a move
  • The problem has to do with funds granted to the church by the EA Stuart Trust Fund
  • The funds have been promised to the church, but are pending distribution
  • Terms of the Stuart Trust Fund
  • "that said Church shall at that time enjoy the support and supervision of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends of Richmond, Indiana… and if the support and supervision of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends of Richmond shall have been withdrawn from the Friends Memorial Church of Seattle prior to the date of this distribution then no payment shall be made to said church…"
  • Friends Memorial questions Indiana YM's decision on this matter
  • Several letters are written back and forth
  • Everett Meeting is also quite bothered by communication from Indiana
  • We appeal directly to the Stuart Trust Fund for a decision
  • We ask Oregon Yearly Meeting for help
After talking with the Stuart Trust Fund attorney, Oregon Yearly Meeting Superintendent, Joseph Reece advises Friends Memorial that
  • The terms of the trust are very clear and the funds will be lost to us if we change to Oregon Yearly Meeting
  • The same day we receive the funds we may join Oregon YM as there are no restrictions after the funds are dispersed
  • Proceed with plans to build, sending plans and contracts to the Stuart Fund for approval
  • Let Everett join Oregon YM first as it will set a precedent
  • Don't be discouraged-"The greater the obstacles, the greater the prize"

Minutes of June 20, 1948
A check was received from the Stuart Trust Fund for $4,390.45 plus interest for a Memorial Building in Hayes Park.
This monthly meeting was received into Oregon Yearly Meeting with full membership status.
Correspondence from Indiana YM about this action was very satisfactory.

(Over the years Esther Woodward, a member of the church in 1948,
reminded people of the way Seattle Friends did not follow the wishes of Indiana Yearly Meeting and the Stuart Foundation.
Seattle Friends followed the "letter" of the law,
rather than being faithful to respect all parties involved.
Therefore, much later, at the insistence of Esther Woodward,
forgiveness was asked for and given by Indiana Yearly Meeting.)

Name Discussion
May 30, 1948 Minutes
---"The subject of the confusion in names in Quarterly Meeting and YM reports
due to the use of 'Seattle Meeting' by Othello Street Group arose.
The sense of the meeting was that this meeting, already being incorporated as Seattle Monthly Mtg. should retain this name officially.
It was decided to write to Clark Smith, QM superintendent, our decision."

June 20, 1948 Minutes
---"Discussion arose concerning a distinguishing name for the meeting as there are now five Friends Meetings in Seattle.
It seemed to be the wish of the meeting to be known as the Hayes Park Meeting in YM and QM reports and also locally."

March 18, 1949
--- "Discussion was brought up by the pastor regarding the name of the mtg.
Seattle Monthly Meeting was recognized as the official and appropriate designation for the meeting.
It seemed that most of the members approved discouraging the use of Friends Memorial Church as a name for the mtg."
