Pastor Lorraine's Sermon for July 6, 2003

God Eternal

As a child, I remember thinking about how God always was
God never began and will never end

Like a circle-no beginning, no ending

In Exodus 3 we find the story of Moses and the burning bush

God appeared to Moses through a bush that was burning
but not consumed by fire

God tells him this is holy ground and who he is

"I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."

Moses recognizes that he is in the presence of God
God tells him that he wants him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt

Moses says, "Who? Me?"
God says "I will be with you!"
Moses asks, "What is your name? Who do I say sent me?"

God's response

"I am who I am. Say, 'I am has sent me to you.'"

Simply… I am… it's always present tense

In John 8 Jesus talks with the Jews about who he is
and whether he is greater than Abraham

The people ask him if he has seen Abraham

Jesus replies, "Before Abraham was, I am."

Not only would they recognize "I AM" as a title for God
hence Jesus is God
but Jesus was also saying that he was eternal

God is timeless

Think of it as God is in all of space
God is not bound by space or time
God is everywhere at once
God is in all time at once
God is the everlasting now
The end is one with the beginning
Alpha and Omega are the same

We are stuck in time
Like a tube suspended in space
In the tube time exists in a one way direction
We can only go forward in time
But God is all around the tube
and is not limited or bound by the limits of the tube
God can time travel
Hence God can heal the past
The conflict of changing the past isn't an issue with God
Because God doesn't just jump back to a spot in time From where time only goes forward
In God all time is truly now

God is creator-Only one who is not created can create all things

All life is in and from God

God eternal, creator, unchangeable

In a life of constant change, God is eternal, everlasting

When nothing seems solid, God is my rock

In the presence of One eternal, I rest

Revelation 1:8-"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.
