Becky Wood is going to the Siloe Clinic in Baja California, Mexico
|
In my twenties, I had opportunities to work internationally. These were good experiences in my life. I have continued to have a deep enjoyment with cross-cultural experiences. When I became an RN, I had hopes that one day I would be able to practice medicine internationally. And that day has come.
Evergreen Hospital provides employees with over a decade of experience, an unpaid leave-of-absence that allows for other forms of medical service. This past year I made it to the level of seniority!! Over the last year, I have been looking for appropriate opportunities to use my medical skills internationally. This summer I was connected with a volunteer opportunity to work in a rural, free clinic in Mexico, Siloé Clinic in La Mision, Baja California. It seemed to fit my skills and sense of community. It also required that I make a six month commitment.
Six months away was a bit of a gulp, but I've felt very energized and happy as I've been planning this adventure. At North Seattle Friends, we know that where one person goes, we all go. As a single person, traveling to a place where I haven't actually met anyone yet, doing new things in a language that is not my first nature, I am happy to feel that sense of community support. Your involvement lets me know I'm not 'out there'... 'alone'. And that I’m not doing this 'all on my own' in some kind of overly brave way.
Each of you keeps me balanced. Thanks for all the ways you have collectively helped me take care of the nitty-gritty and the lofty!
With love, Becky
